The church in Kateri-Tekakwitha was built in 1987 due to a fire that completely destroyed the original church on March 12, 1986. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is the first aboriginal in North America to be recognized by the Catholic Church. The Masteuiatsh community was bestowed with the mission of speading the devotion of the holy Kateri Tekakwitha with the region's visitors.
